Why do my characters always insist on taking on lives of their own?? I mean i had no real set plans for the characters in Seron so far, but I'd at least like to maintain the illusion that I am in control of my books destiny, and not it's characters. They, however, seem to be hell bent on showing me just how futile that notion is. Here's about how things went last time I worked on Seron. Me: All right, lets see what I need for this story. It's going to be about four friends who grow and change at The Center, and eventually work together to do great things. The main character will obviously be Christin.
Christin: Yup thats me. The main character. Full of mischief.
Me: I don't remember deciding that. I wanted you to be a bit serious, and introspective.
Christin: Look, who knows me better, me or you? I say I'm full of mischief, and must have lots of hijinks and amusing witty remarks.
Me: Oy!! Ok. Ok. Now on to the next thing. I know Jerin is one of the four. And he's gay and promiscous and an empath...
Jarin: Ehm! I won't argue with the first two things, but I am most definitely not just an empath!
Me: *raises eyebrow* Oh? And I suppose you have a good reason why not?
Jarin: Yup. It would be too boring to have half the people in the group be mind talented.
Me: Well yeah, but...
Jarin: I'm an empath and a sword talent, thank you very much.
Me: But how am I supposed to reconcile those two things? I mean you'd hurt every time you fought someone, and you'd hate to fight. Tell me how you deal with all those problems.
Jarin: *Shrugs* I don't know. You're the author, not me. I'm just a character, what do I know?
Me: *exasperated sigh* I'll deal with it... somehow. I always do. *clears throat* Moving on. Now I need the two other characters. I know I want one of them to be gay as well, and have hard time coming to terms with it because their from a small village. I suppose I should create a new character...
Damen (a new character I have barely written, Christin's older brother): It's me obviously. I need to be a main character. Even my name screams main character. Plus you've already made me sensitive and integral to Christin's happiness.
Me:*looks lost* I have?
Damen: Sure you have. Plus how could you not give such an awesome character as me a big part?
Me: But you already have a part, as Christin's brother. And I wanted ffour friends, not three friends and two brothers...
Damen: *puppy dog eyes*
Me: *tears hair* Fine, I give up!!! but now I need to know who the fourth character is. I'm completely stuck, I could really use ideas. *Looks at characters expectantly*
All three characters: How are we supposed to know that, we're just characters after all. * all walk away whistling*
Me: OY!!!!!!!
